Central Park Walk in New York

In the 1850s, realizing the need for a large public green space for New Yorkers to get away from the chaos and noise of the city, the New York legislature set aside a vast swath of land in Upper Manhattan. Landscape designers Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux developed the winning design for the park, influenced by naturalistic landscapes which were popular in park design at the time. Any architectural features and roads were to be visually integrated into the surrounding landscape, to maintain the "rustic" feel of the park. The park was officially completed in 1873, with more than 500,000 cubic feet of topsoil brought in from New Jersey and millions of trees, shrubs, and other plants laying the foundation of the park.
Through the early 20th century the park fell into a decline due to a lack of maintenance, with dead trees, worn-out lawns, and much litter and vandalism. The park received a major boost in the 1930s, when these issues were finally addressed, but the park once again fell into a decline in the late 20th century, becoming increasingly run-down and crime-ridden through the 1960s and 70s. In 1980, the Central Park Conservancy was founded under contract from the city to restore and maintain the park. Today, the violent night crimes of previous decades are all but gone, and common sense is all you really need to stay safe in the park today.

The Public Garden exhibits ornamental flower shows and is the first botanical garden of the city. Enjoy boating rides on the swan boats. Enjoy some quiet and charming moments at the waterfront; there are some good food courts and shops here. Enjoy a cruise with your loved ones on a warm, sunny day.
The New England Holocaust is one of the finest architectures of Boston. The memorial consists of six fine glass towers which resemble the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust; people lit candles here. Walk along the Beacon hills to enjoy the works of original brick architecture and cobblestone streets. It consists of massive town houses and is considered to be a heritage architecture of the city. The Boston Harbour deserves a complete day of your tour. This is an island consisting of thirty four small islands, the George's Island being the most popular for its historical significance. You can arrange camps, explore light houses, go for Kayaks, ride harbor ferries, hike and swim here, providing a complete package of entertainment.
Last but not the least; the dinning and shopping is a wonderful experience in Boston. It is known for the delicious seafood, like chips, lobsters, baked brand and fresh dairy products. The Boston flights are available with all important airlines of the world and you can book tickets online, sitting at home.

Lush sandy beaches are not what travellers usually associate with the likes of an American city such as Chicago! But you may be surprised when you begin travelling in Chicago at the vastness of the city's shoreline and the bonus of more than 30 beaches to laze on.
This wonderful American city bucks the trend, given its long industrial past, in offering a stunning coastline with fantastic opportunities for walkers and bikers alike. With a clutch of golf courses along the way, anyone travelling in Chicago should encompass these particular beaches when exploring the outer reaches of the Windy City.

North Avenue Beach
If you're looking for a beach day away from the city, try heading to the most favoured city beach locale of North Avenue. Featuring fantastic facilities for all, the beach, located in the Lincoln Park neighbourhood, gives you the chance to watch volleyball tournaments and water-related shows. The seven-mile long coast also enables you to explore Lincoln Park, the city's largest public park, which also features a zoo, public art exhibits and landscaped gardens.

Montrose Beach
For those looking for space and privacy, Montrose Beach - the largest along the shoreline - has bundles. In the city's Uptown district, the beach offers the opportunity for you to enjoy kayaking right onto Lake Michigan as well as trekking and running trails. It is used annually for the 4th of July fireworks and is home to soccer tournaments too.

63rd Street Beach
Travelling in Chicago will inevitably see you come up on Jackson Park, the city's iconic green space, which was created by the designers of New York City's Central Park. While the park offers many interesting aspects, such as the Japanese strolling garden, a relic from the park hosting the 1890 World Columbian Exposition, its beach is a favoured weekend getaway for city-dwellers. The beach also hosts the ever-popular bathing pavilion, the 63rd Street Beach House.

Loyola Park
For a fascinating day out, peppered with people-watching and just observing how the city ticks, a trip to the beach and area around Loyola Park will offer everything you could want. Recreation is a by-word in this district with many courts and gyms. You'll also be able to take in the 100ft abstract concrete sculpture, Windform; designed by artist Lynn Takata it is inspired by the movement of water.

North Island

Boasting a 30-acre prairie, you can see several species of resident birds or simply stroll around the area and soak up the atmosphere.

Rainbow Beach
When travelling in Chicago you may well come upon one of the newest beaches opened to the public. Rainbow Beach is located in the south area of the city and hosts more than 50 acres of gardens - some of the oldest in the city - as well as fitness areas, Wi-Fi spots and a sand dune habitat.

Downtown has been the nucleus of Buffalo since its foundation; over two centuries later, it retains its central importance in the Niagara Frontier both geographically and commercially. Though its bygone era of bustling streets and fancy department stores along Main Street has not been completely reclaimed, visitors to downtown today will be greeted with a lot more than the boarded-up storefronts and eerie desolation that they would have seen a quarter-century ago.

Things to do in Washington D.C., USA. Downtown Walking Tour

On July 9, 1790, Congress passed the Residence Act, which approved the creation of a national capital on the Potomac River. The exact location was to be selected by President George Washington, who signed the bill into law on July 16.
Washington, D.C., is a planned city. In 1791, President Washington commissioned Pierre (Peter) Charles L’Enfant, a French-born architect and city planner, to design the new capital. The L'Enfant Plan featured broad streets and avenues radiating out from rectangles, providing room for open space and landscaping. He based his design on plans of cities such as Paris, Amsterdam, Karlsruhe, and Milan brought from Europe by Thomas Jefferson in 1788.
The architecture of Washington varies greatly. Six of the top 10 buildings in the American Institute of Architects' 2007 ranking of "America's Favorite Architecture" are in the District of Columbia: the White House; the Washington National Cathedral; the Thomas Jefferson Memorial; the United States Capitol; the Lincoln Memorial; and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The neoclassical, Georgian, gothic, and modern architectural styles are all reflected among those six structures and many other prominent edifices in Washington. Notable exceptions include buildings constructed in the French Second Empire style such as the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.

Things to do in Boston - Bridges and Esplanades Along the Charles

For a great cinematic view of Boston take a ride over the Charles River on the Red Line across the Longfellow Bridge between Kendall Square and Charles/MGH Stations. The train accelerates as it leaves the station to meet the rising curve of the bridge, and the short spell of darkness in the subway tunnel dissolves on a sunny day in a flash of blue sky and open water.
This walk takes a longer look at the views of the Lower Charles from a succession of vantage points along the bridge. It encompasses what appears to be one of the most visible and carefully preserved natural features of Boston. However, during the mid-19th century the shallow basin was lined with tenements and industries; at low tide it was a vast expanse of sewage-laden mud flats.
The reclamation of the riverbanks began with the Cambridge Esplanade in 1883 and continues to this day. This walk takes in many of the Charles River's loveliest and most historic sites--not to mention its incomparable views of the city.

A Tour of German Los Angeles in the Twentieth Century

In the first half of the twentieth century, the population of German immigrants in Southern California flourished, particularly in Los Angeles. While Germans had had a presence in the region well before the 1900s, the new century would bring a uniquely talented group of artists, musicians, entrepreneurs, and intellectuals out to the West Coast, as either permanent citizens or long-term visitors living in exile from Hitler’s Europe. From Carl Laemmle to Thomas Mann, many of these famed émigrés would produce significant and important work during their time in Los Angeles.
